“Every bite you take is a choice you make about how well you care for yourself.”

5 SURPRISING FAT FACTS

1. Cholesterol is NOT the cause of heart disease. As many people with low cholesterol as with high cholesterol have heart disease. Cholesterol is a vital substance your body needs for optimal health.. There are many reasons that your body, with improper nutrition can turn cholesterol into a harmful substance, but simply avoiding cholesterol will not prevent heart disease and will deplete not promote optimal health.

2. Most vegetable oils are harmful to health because they are less stable than animal fat and become rancid during processing. Rancid fats cause free radical damage (oxidative stress) in your body’s cells, a process similar to the rust eating away at your car. Avoid sunflower, safflower, corn, canola and generic vegetable oils. Stick with Olive, sesame and nut oils such as walnut

3. Coconut Oil is good for you! Contrary to popular belief, coconut oil is not a “bad fat”. The body is able burn it very easily and it supplies a vital nutrient, lauric acid, which helps build your immunity. Lauric acid is the substance in mother’s breast milk that gives the nursing infant immunity against disease.

4. Margarine and any food with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fat in it should be avoided. These are also called “trans-fats”—they have been molecularly rearranged in processing to a substance which is known to increase your risks for heart disease and cancer. Butter in moderate amounts, preferably organic, is much healthier.

5. There are other more significant markers of heart health than total cholesterol. The ratio of total cholesterol divided by HDL, as well as triglyceride, HDL and LDL numbers are far more useful. There are also three very significant markers for heart disease you should ask your doctor to test for: C reactive protein, Homocysteine, and Lipoprotein (a).
